What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is the leading brand for clear aligners, a revolutionary technology that offers convenience, predictability, comfort, and discrete cosmetic treatment to move teeth and align your bite.

Invisalign is not a one-size-fits-all, in fact, one of the key factors towards having a successful treatment with Invisalign is your choice in provider.

Here are your choices: General Dentists, Mail-Order Clear Aligners, and Invisalign Certified Orthodontists.

General dentists, or your family dentist, may have some experience in orthodontic treatment. However, general dentists tend to focus on many facets of oral health, including fillings, cleanings, crowns, and more. In a single day, a general dentist can see several types of procedures, and they may not focus their practice on orthodontics alone. Seeing a general dentist for Invisalign is better than trying to DIY this at home through mail order aligners, but you do have another choice. Seeing an Orthodontist in Porter Ranch has many benefits because they focus their entire day on moving teeth around, diagnosing jaw discrepancies, bite abnormalities, and the neuromuscular etiology of the issue.

Mail Order aligners are clear aligners you get sent to your house. These are not a recommended option to align your teeth. With little doctor oversight, I’ve seen many issues where the teeth are straight but do not fit together well. Many patients have sought my care after rushing into a mail order for clear aligner treatment. I would not recommend this option to anyone. Teeth should fit together like a zipper or Lego pieces, without the edges biting end to end. Many times, these issues manifest years later in the form of headaches, jaw soreness, and loose teeth.

We saved the best for last, Invisalign Certified Orthodontists! Orthodontists are dental specialists who have completed 2-3 years of additional training in the art and science of tooth movement, orthopedic jaw stability, as well as understanding biological principles for growth and development. As an orthodontist, I spend every day studying my cases, learning about the latest developments in the field, and attending the American Association of Orthodontics scientific meetings. In addition to being an Invisalign Certified Orthodontist, I have also been named a Domat by the American Board of Orthodontics, meaning I have demonstrated my expertise, knowledge, and skill in front of the highest standard of orthodontic care present in the world. Few orthodontists are both board certified and Invisalign certified, making our practice highly unique and sought after.

Your 3 options for care are:

General Dentists

Pros: Can be convenient if you have a doctor you already know

Cons: Their focus is not only on orthodontics, so their expertise may be limited to more challenging cases, or cases where the underlying issues are growth or neuromuscular abnormalities.

Recommendation: Ask your general dentist for a referral to see us in Porter Ranch, although please keep in mind, that no referral is needed for you to schedule an appointment for a free consultation with us.

Mail Order Clear Aligners

Pros: The pros are limited, and I have a hard time seeing any benefit except for the extreme convenience of start

Cons: Limited support, limited ability to get the teeth to fit together, limited doctor time, no individualized plan, no thoroughness in diagnosis.

Recommendation: We do not recommend this option to anyone

Invisalign Certified Orthodontist

Pros: Orthodontists have extensive knowledge and skill in treating patients of all ages, with all complexities and needs of treatment. Their focus is solely on tooth movement, so while they can not do a crown or make a denture, they are extremely specialized in this important treatment.

Cons: Orthodontists are not able to provide general dentistry such as crowns, fillings, or other general dental needs.

Recommendation: Do schedule an appointment with an orthodontist for your Invisalign and braces needs. Our office offers a free consultation.
